Privacy

What we know about you, in plain English.

Last updated: 3 June 2026

We’re building Watt Matters as an advisor — not a lead farm. The privacy policy reflects that. The short version: we collect what we need to give you honest solar advice, we don’t sell your contact to anyone, and you can delete everything any time.

What we collect

When you use the calculator: your monthly bill, roof area, hours of power cuts, pincode/state, system-type preference, and the result. No name or contact is required to run it.

When you sign up: email address and password (the password is hashed with bcrypt before it’s stored — we never see the plain version), and your role (homeowner or installer).

When you submit a brief or interact with installers: name, phone, address, photos of your roof or electricity bill, preferred site-visit slots. This part is optional and only happens if and when you choose to engage installers through us.

Analytics: we use Plausible Analytics, which is privacy-friendly — no cookies, no cross-site tracking, no personal data. It tells us anonymous things like "X people visited the home page today" and "Y people completed the calculator," not who you are.

What we use it for

  • Calculator results — compute your savings estimate, recommended system size, subsidy eligibility
  • Account — save your estimate, sign you in, send transactional emails (welcome, password reset, payment receipts)
  • Matching with installers — only after you explicitly submit a brief; only with the installers you choose to engage
  • Service improvement — aggregated analytics to understand which articles get read, where the calculator funnel drops off, etc.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell your contact information. Not to installers, not to advertisers, not to anyone. This is a core promise — the entire pitch of Watt Matters falls apart if we sold leads.
  • We don’t share your details with installers until you ask us to. Even then, your phone and exact address stay masked until the moment you formally accept an installer’s quote.
  • We don’t cold-call you. Communication from Watt Matters is only ever a direct response to something you started.
  • We don’t track you across the web. No retargeting pixels, no Google Analytics, no advertising cookies.

Who can see your data

Only us, and only the small number of service providers we use to actually run the product:

  • Airtable — where we store accounts, calculator results, and installer profiles
  • Amazon SES — sends transactional emails (welcome, etc.)
  • Razorpay — processes payments (if you choose to pay for an assessment or a partner subscription)
  • Vercel — hosts the website
  • Plausible — anonymous analytics, no personal data

Each of these is contractually bound to keep your data confidential and use it only to provide the service.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP Act, 2023) you can:

  • Access the data we hold on you
  • Correct anything that’s wrong
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Withdraw consent at any time (effectively the same as delete)
  • Complain to the Data Protection Board of India if you think we’ve mishandled your data

Email [email protected] and we’ll action any of these within 30 days — usually within 48 hours.

How long we keep it

Calculator results and account data stay until you delete them. If you don’t come back for two years and have never submitted a brief or paid for anything, we’ll proactively delete your account and email you to confirm.

Transactional records of payments (Razorpay invoices, etc.) are retained for seven years to satisfy Indian tax and accounting law.

Changes to this policy

If we make a material change, we’ll email everyone with an account at least 14 days before it takes effect. Trivial edits (typos, link fixes) we just update in place.

Contact

Anything we’ve missed, anything that worries you, or any data request — email [email protected]. Replies usually come within a day.
